Yep, I broke the rule. And this is why you should too…
Being in the fashion world, people always love to talk to me about “fashion rules.” Especially this past week, the topic everyone kept throwing around was “Oh, Labor Day is Monday! We better wear our white pants this weekend because we can’t after Monday.” That got me thinking…”Who in the world made up that rule and why is it one of the most known fashion rules that people actually follow?”
I did some research on how this “rule” came about and learned that back in the 1800’s these women in “high society” thought it would be fun to make fashion rules to differentiate the women that were “in the know” and had lots of money to spend on clothes. The ones that did not follow these rules were excluded from their elite circle and labeled as low society. I know, not nice at all! It sounds like this came right out of the Mean Girls movie. This rule was also put in place to mark the start of the Fall season- and white is known to be a Summer color. You know what I have to say about all this? Who cares! If you live in a place like Miami or Los Angeles and it will still be 89 degrees on September 6th, then why stop wearing white pants? Fashion rules are meant to be broken, it’s called personal style. Some of the most stylish people I look up to and know don’t give a hoot about “rules,” or what people will think. They have confidence and wear what makes them feel beautiful. That’s what style is to me. So, if you are reading this on this mundane Tuesday morning after a long weekend and want to wear white pants- just to be rebellious and break the rules – DO IT! I’m going to wear them loud and proud.
